Lucky, maybe. The founder of the press, Van K. Brock offered me the job in 1992 though I had no experience and no desire to be involved in the publishing business. Since it was an unpaid position at least I was not wasting anyone's money.
Basically, we have two people who do all of the work on the books and one Board member who runs our website. We work almost for free.
Be honest--don't pretend to have read our books (but if you are being dishonest, be convincing.) Be brief-- whether being honest or not.
Outside of the contest process, we publish the book selected and sent to us by the Philip Levine Prize and we pick two more books per year that we like.
Good work and a sense that the poet will work hard to promote the book.
Write well. Wait till you have a good book before submitting.
Yes, when Robert Dana asked me at dinner in Pittsburgh if I wanted to publish his book. I said yes.
Me. Well, not just for ego reasons; I guess Anhinga publishes mostly books I like. So the ideal reader would like what I like.
