Many organizations sponsor awards, some that offer cash prizes, some just the recognition. If your publication or company wins an award, milk it! Plaster your website, send press releases, include mentions in grant proposals. Many book awards include stickers you can put on your books, a great sales tool. CLMP has collected a by-no-means comprehensive list of prizes, many of which are friendly toward independent publishers. The list also includes contact information for "best of" anthologies — not prizes but offer a similar effect for magazines.
