With support from Illinois Humanities, Lucky Jefferson is surveying Black, African, and African-American-identifying writers and artists residing in Chicago’s North Side, West Side, and South Side neighborhoods to better evaluate the needs and interests of local creatives.
The publishing industry still struggles with representing marginalized communities on a national level. The stories that continue to be prioritized are of Western languages and of white-identifying populations. 76% of all representation in publishing is through the lens of non-BIPOC writers, editors, and artists. And it’s through this lens that historically underrepresented cultures, narratives, and a sense of belonging are throttled.
Through three virtual focus groups and a self-guided survey , we plan to deepen the literary world’s understanding of the local literary community as Lucky Jefferson plans to cultivate storytelling and interactive experiences, between neighborhoods and artists.
All participants and attendees will be entered into a raffle for $100.
