Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Mission Statement: 11th Hour is the newest biannual journal on Binghamton University’s campus, created in 2024 as the brainchild of the Binghamton University Writers’ Circle (a PSS writing affinity group) during a late-night dinner commiseration. Our intrepid editors, all writers themselves, are no strangers to the crushing rite of “submission” — an inadequate but appropriate word that, as all writers know, is often synonymous with “rejection.” But fear not! The 11th Hour is here! Not only will we accept stories from anyone — faculty, staff, students, and alumni, in addition to those totally unaffiliated with the university — our mission is to create a community of writers looking to uplift each other in their persistence. We have established a special requirement to align with that goal: to be featured here, we want the pieces you’ve worked on to have gone through at least 11 rejections. Let us be clear: entry in this journal is not a consolation prize, but a badge of honor. We can’t guarantee a spot for everyone, but we are proud to publish the persevering writer, and the submissions that have faced rejection after rejection and yet whose authors refuse to give up. If you have faith in your prose piece, send it our way, regardless of marketability, eccentricity, or aesthetic genre, along with the names and dates of your rejections. Really — we want to read them! Stephen King’s first novel, Carrie, was rejected at least 30 times. Frank Herbert’s Dune had 23. Jack London received over 600 rejections before publishing a single story. So don’t give up now — the clock is still ticking!
